This research studies new methods for constructingeconomical plans to deploy wireless sensor nodes ofmultiple types and form a reliable wireless sensornetwork to monitor, throughout a given time period,a large set of targets spread across a geographicalspace. It initiates and carries out a thoroughanalytical investigation on deploying multiple typesof sensors for constructing a wireless sensor networkthat satisfies, simultaneously, the min-cost, thelifetime, the fault-tolerance, and the connectivityrequirements. It integrates concepts and methods inlinear programming, convex programming, reliabilitytheory, graph theory, and approximation algorithmsto model these requirements and find efficient solutions. Results of this research provide a substantial impact onlarge-scale, terrestrial and underwater, wireless sensornetwork applications and communication protocol designs.More specifically, this research seeks analytical modelsto provide, with minimum monetary cost on sensor nodes, reliable sensor placements and time scheduling to hingeon spatial-temporal information and power consumption.Despite failures and limited power supply of sensornodes, the network must guarantee that each spatialtarget be watched by at least one active sensor at anygiven moment during a pre-determined period of timerequired by the underlying application. This impliessensor placements must satisfy the spatial-temporalcoverage, the fault-tolerance, and the min-costrequirements for single-hop networks; as well as theadditional connectivity requirement for multi-hopnetworks, which ensures that each sensor node isconnected to a base station through a communication path.
