The continuation of this project is necessary to gain more expertise in the tribological optimization of guide pads for the BTA deep hole drilling. In this project a new process chain has been developed. This chain includes the coating with friction reducing ta-C. Moreover, the pre- and aftertreatmentis realized by microfinishing. This process effects a defined shape optimization of the axial lead-in-area when finishing the uncoated substrate. The finishing as an after-treatment is responsible for an effective removal of coating defects. The wear behavior of the modified guide pads is significantly better than the wear behavior of conventional pads. An optimum process strategy has been developed which allows for the shape optimization of the guide pads by microfinishing the substrate. However, concerning the coating, there is no sufficient information about the correlation of the coating characteristics and the wear behavior in the BTA process. Thus, a fundamental analysis with a bigger number of coatings is necessary and should be conducted within a second phase of the project. Moreover, the effectiveness of the shape optimization of guide pads by microfinishing should be analyzed by the use of other coatings.
