Descriptive catalogue of the Latin manuscripts from Freising in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek Munich (volume 3: Clm 6473-6832 and manuscripts of Freising provenance from the 'supplement')

The collection of manuscripts from Freising constitutes one of the major holdings of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München (BSB; Bavarian State Library in Munich) due to its importance for cultural history and its age. The origins of the library and scriptorium of the Cathedral of Freising date back to the eighth century. After the dissolution of religious houses in the course of the secularisation, c. 400 manuscripts were transferred to the Wittelsbach court library at Munich in 1802/3. The collection of Latin manuscripts from the cathedral library at Freising today comprises 366 volumes among the Co-dices latini monacenses (Clm 6201- 6787); a further nine manuscripts come from other religious insti-tutions in Freising, and 28 more manuscripts can be found in the so-called ¿supplement¿ (Clm 23001 sqq.: ¿Codices diversae originis¿). Up to now, the collection is only listed in its entirely in an inventory which was published in 1873. The compilation of a descriptive catalogue based on modern scholar-ship was funded from 1990 to 2003 by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. In this period, de-scriptions of 229 Latin manuscripts from the cathedral library in Freising were compiled; the first vol-ume of the catalogue (for Clm 6201-6316) was published in the year 2000, the second one (for Clm 6317-6437) in 2011. The current project aims at compiling descriptive descriptions of the 178 manu-scripts on paper from Freising (Clm 6327-6832 sowie Supplement), which will complete the catalogu-ing project and result in a third and final volume. The descriptions of all 229 manuscripts of the first two catalogue volumes and the 178 manuscripts from the current project are also made accessible online in the database ¿Manuscripta mediaevalia¿. About a third of the Latin manuscripts from Freising (155 volumes) have already been digitized by the BSB and are accessible online.
