The goal of the proposed research is the design and synthesis of organic materials for energy storage, for optoelectronic applications, and as templates for novel types of nanotubes. In the first sub-project organic small molecule and polymeric compounds will be developed as electrode materials for batteries. This will be achieved by synthesizing redox active molecules that will be incorporated into polymer architectures. The goal of the second sub-project is the synthesis of oligomers and polymers, in which conjugation is mediated through spiro centers. Due to the threedimensional structure of the resulting materials high stabilities are expected in thin film. The emission properties can be tuned by variation of the spiro units. Within the third sub-project conjugated nanobelts will be synthesized that can serve as model systems for novel types of nanotubes. These cyclic compounds have high potential for host-guest interactions, as active device materials, and for functional surface patterning.
