Project P15 (Hunke) analyzes the role of accessory proteins in coordinating bacterial two-component signaling (TCS) forming a microcompartment in the bacterial plasma membrane. The E. coli Cpx-TCS detects and responds to perturbations of the bacterial envelope and transmits signals within and between bacterial membranes. The group will (a) determine the molecular basis of the communication between CpxA receptor and the soluble CpxP (b) analyze how the Cpx-TCS system interacts with the outer membrane lipoprotein NlpE to allow signaling across two membranes, and (c) unravel how signaling is coordinated with transcription.
