The project on civil war recurrence investigates to what extent durable peace depends on the balance of power and the scope of compromise between the parties to the conflict at the end of a civil war. Common sense suggests that peace is the more stable the more balanced the post-war order is. A major part of pertinent studies, however, concludes that peace is secured by a preponderance of power and a post-war order which implements the demands of the stronger conflict party. In a multi-stage analysis the project examines how to design post-war orders that promise to prevent another civil war. Its unique contribution to research on civil war recurrence is to combine quantitative methods, qualitative-configurational analysis, and case studies. The project examines societies in which a civil war ended between 1990 and 2009.
