Archaeological Research in the City of Antakya (Antioch on the Orontes), Final Evaluation and publication

There are only a few ancient cities, especially on the metropolis level, where there is such a conspicuous discrepancy between an abundant literary tradition and a comparatively scanty archaeological heritage as in the case of Antioch on the Orontes (Antakya). Despite the attempts of the franco-american enterprise of the 1930's, the archaeological results of the seven field seasons (1932-1939) have been heavily critizised by scholarship under a both topographical and chronological point of view. In order to reconsider the archaeology of Antioch, a turkish-german field project was initiated (2004 - 2008), which focussed on topography (in an attempt to replace of the unreliable city map of 1938), urbanism and architecture of the greco-roman and byzantine city. The present application aims at a full evaluation of the results of our multidiciplinary enterprise and a publication of both city map and a set of architectural studies carried out since 2004 (including the complete fortification systems, Iron Gate, water installations, necropoleis and various intra- and extraurban monuments). The overarching objective of the publication is to supply reliable data on the urban structure of hellenistic, roman and late antique Antioch and to allow for a reconstruction of the urban development of the city. The publication is expected to serve as a sound basis for a future approach on the archaeological, topographical and philological research of Antioch, which has long reached an unsatisfying impasse.
