VERBA ALPINA. The Alpine culture area reflected by its multilingualism

The present application is in regards to the long-term project VerbaAlpina, which has been receiving funding since October 2014. The work plan is based on onomasiological fields, which will be worked through one after another. In the first project phase the field of MOUNTAIN PASTURE and in the soon ending project phase II the onomasiological fields TRADITIONAL CUISINE, FLORA, FAUNA, LANDSCAPE FORMATIONS and WEATHER have been systematically recorded and integrated into the existing corpus. The subsequent phase, which is the subject of this application, will systematically record the field "MODERN LIFE" (primarily ECOLOGY and TOURISM). In contrast to the two previous phases, it is no longer possible to draw on existing material that has been published traditionally. Instead, the majority of the data has to be collected via crowdsourcing, which has already proven to be a successful method. In addition, an already emerging newspaper corpus will be analysed for the Romansh and Ladin minor languages. Moreover, the data of the Alpine region that has been collected by VerbaAlpina so far will be placed in the broader context of other European mountain regions, in particular those with a Romansh-speaking population. For this purpose, it is intended to also collect data from the Pyrenees, from mountain regions in Sardinia and Sicily (Madonie) as well as in the area of settlement of the Aromanians (Albania/Greece) and possibly other suitable areas (e.g. southern Massif Central). This approach is expected, inter alia, to yield some findings regarding research on substrates. As in previous funding periods, VerbaAlpina will continue its intensive methodological reflection and thus meet the challenges of the constantly evolving Digital Humanities with appropriate concepts and operationalised implementations. The basic orientation, i.e. the methods and objectives of the project, has not changed compared to the two previous applications.
