The aim of this study is to investigate genetic variants and gene interactions, which play a role in the development of curly hair. In our previous analyses we were able to detect specific mutations for curly hair. Expression analyses revealed that there are interactions of different genes involved in the determination of tightness and thickness of curls. Due to these findings, we are going to use Mangaliza pigs as an animal model for the horse to investigate these interactions that affect seasonal and temperature-dependent modifications of curly hair. The sampling is going to take place in a uniform environment, in monthly intervals and in F1 and F2 generations of Mangaliza x German Large White or German Lanrace matings. Due to the short generation interval and high number of progeny, the pig is an appropriate model and thus enables a new approach for research of hair development. In addition, the identification of a genetic variant responsible for the Mangaliza breed-specific phenotype contributes to species conservation of this endangered breed.
