The project, which has been initiated by the German Initiative for Networking Information (DINI), intends to promote the Open Researcher and Contributer ID (ORCID) for the persistent identification of researchers in Germany. It aims to support the sustainable implementation of ORCID by an integrated approach, since ORCID is considered to be implemented in many universities and research institutions in Germany. Crucial organisational, technical and legal questions concerning the de facto standard ORCID have emerged in the course of the extension of institutional information systems, e.g. Open Access Repositories or Current Research Information System (CRIS). By including international experience, important supra-regional infrastructures as the Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND) and the Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE) as well as publication formats beyond conventional text-based publications, the project network will open up new fields of applications for harmonised registration of scientific publications by means of ORCID. The project partners promote the ORCID standard by using their networks and contribute to the interoperability of the information systems by connecting ORCID with other persistent identifiers. The project is integrated into the standardisation works and networking activities of DINI. The three project partners who have been cooperating within the scope of some DINI working groups for a long time are supported by infrastructure facilities of thirteen universities, research institutions and ORCID. At the same time the project can refer to some related international groundwork by the Knowledge Exchange network or by the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR) that will be edited and adapted during the project to the specific requirements of the German institutions.
