本研究の目的は、帝政期ドイツの植民地経済政策を、植民地労働論、植民地貿易論、植民地通貨・金融政策の視点から再検討する基課題に沿って、ドイツのアジア経済への参入に焦点を合わせ、その歴史的意義を分析することである。そして、グローバルな視点を重視し、ドイツでグローバル史を推進するベルリン自由大学ゼバスティアン・コンラート教授と共同で本研究課題を進めている。計画通り、2022年3月末にベルリン自由大学フリードリヒ・マイネッケ研究院客員研究員として研究に取り組んだ。コンラート教授と意見交換を行い、ベルリン州立図書館およびハンブルク商業会議所文書館などで同時代文献および未公刊史料の収集・分析を進めた。その過程で、アジア経済へのドイツの参入に際して、インド・東南アジアを経由してドイツ商社がネットワークを形成していったことが浮かび上がってきた。その実態を中国系労働者輸送や落花生・ゴマなどの油糧種子貿易の具体的な事例から分析を進めることができた。その一方で、新型コロナ感染症の影響により、予定していた山東での現地調査を延期せざるをえなかった。そのため、米国での調査を10月末から12月中旬までに予定を繰り上げ、ワシントンD・Cの国立公文書館およびフィラデルフィアの米国長老派協会で山東落花生に関する史料調査を行った。また、トランスナショナル史・グローバル史の視点からドイツ植民地主義についての研究を発表してきた、ジョージ・ワシントン大学のアンジェラ・ジマーマン教授と面会し、研究交流を行うことができた。
