项目摘要

本研究プロジェクトでは16・17世紀に来日した宣教師の中で、イエズス会士とその後16世紀末・17世紀の初めにフィリピンより来日したスペイン系の托鉢修道会との交流を主題とした。中では、ほとんど研究されていない、それらの托鉢修道会が既に来日していたイエズス会と接してどのような反応を示し、互いに敵対したのかを研究してきた。研究プロジェクトの出発点は2018年8月にマドリードにあるフランシスコ会の文書館（イベロ・オリエンタル史料コレクション）を一週間訪問した際に発見した非常に興味深く他には見られない史料（AFIO 23-8）である。その内容を簡単にまとめると、1626-1627年に東北地方で行われたイエズス会とフランシスコ会、つまりキリスト教宣教師同士の教義及び布教の権利を巡る論争である。時代的には、まさに日本においてキリスト教が衰退し、本格的な迫害を受けていた時代であり、全ての外国人宣教師の死、追放、背教によって、日本からキリスト教がほとんど姿を消したのは、この直後のことであった。禁教令が発布される前のイエズス会と托鉢修道会の論争に関しては先行研究が幾つかがあるのに対して、迫害期におけるそれらの論争の研究はほとんどないと言えるので、当該史料は非常に重要である。本研究プロジェクトの主な目標はその史料を活字化・翻訳・研究すると共に、他の文書館を訪れ、それに関連する他の資料を調査・研究することであった。研究成果としては、以上の研究作業を行い、「AFIO 23-8」史料の研究、翻刻、写真、現代語訳及び英訳を紹介する研究書物を準備してきた。その原稿を刊行するに当たり、JSPS補助金、2022年度研究成果公開促進費（学術図書）（22HP5007）の交付を受け、2023年3月に春秋社より、『日本のキリスト教迫害期における宣教師の「堅信」論争』というタイトルで書籍の形で出版された。
