项目摘要

前年度までは、主たる考察対象の旧制第二高等学校・忠愛之友倶楽部（学生YMCA）の草創期、また仙台の近代教育史、キリスト教思想史、地域史（災害など）といった周辺事項の二方面に目配りしつつ網羅的な調査を行ってきたが、本年度はこれまでに得られた知見を論文としてまとめるとともに、さらに研究を深めるべき事項についてさらなる資料調査・収集とその分析作業を行った。論文化の方では、草創期忠愛之友倶楽部に見られるキリスト教思想について、当時のキリスト教思想やキリスト教界の動向、また仙台の地域史を踏まえながら、近代日本思想史においていかに位置付けることができるかを考察した。具体的には、忠愛之友倶楽部が仙台という地方都市に存在したがために、中央のキリスト教運動とはやや事情が異なり、日本のキリスト教界の動向に左右されづらい形で外国人宣教師が学生教育を行い得たこと、明治30年代に一時的な自由主義神学の流入・影響による外国人宣教師との疎遠化が生じたものの、ほどなく学生の思想傾向がオーソドックスな福音主義信仰に回帰し、またその過程では貧困や災害といった実社会的課題に取り組む外国人宣教師からの影響も強かったと考えられることを明らかにした。以上は本研究課題の基幹となる成果であり、すでに脱稿のうえ所属する学会の機関誌に投稿し、査読結果の通知を待っている状態である。その後は、外国人宣教師による宗教教育と社会事業・社会実践の関係性を具体的事例からさらに検証するため、彼らが出身国アメリカの支援者に向けて活動を周知・報告する目的で発行していた広報誌などの英字資料を調査し、読解を進めている。具体的には、東北学院の宣教師Ｗ・Ｅ・ホーイを中心に教派横断的な活動紹介の場となっていた雑誌"The Japan Evangelist"などである。これらについては、本年度内にその成果を学会、研究会等で報告し、かつ論文化まで進めるつもりである。

The above is the status of the basic results of this research project, the contribution of the manuscript to the journal of the institute, and the notification of the results of the investigation. The purpose of this report is to investigate and analyze the relationship between religious education and social undertakings and social practices of foreign missionaries. The Japanese Evangelist was introduced to the activities of the missionaries of Tohoku College. This year's achievements will be reported to the Society and the Seminar, and the discussion of culture will be conducted.
