新型コロナウィルス感染症の世界的な流行への対応策に見られるように、社会における科学の重要性は増している。その中で、最新の科学研究を広く社会に伝える科学報道は大きな役割を果たす。一方で、インターネットを媒体とする新興メディアが登場し、多種多様なメディアが科学報道に携わるようになっているが、最新の科学研究が大学や研究機関などの情報源からマス・メディアを通して社会に届けられる過程には不明な点が多い。日本のメディアには、大きく分けて記者クラブを介して、ニュース源から公式な情報を得ている新聞やテレビ局といった伝統的な報道媒体と記者クラブへ加盟していないか、加盟していてもほとんど利用していない、ネットメディアや英字メディア、雑誌などの報道媒体が存在することが知られており、本研究では、特に後者の報道媒体に焦点を当てている。今年度は、科学のニュースを伝える英字メディアやネットメディアの記者、フリーランスの科学記者11名を対象に半構造化されたインタビューを行い、記者クラブを介さずにどのように大学や研究機関などの情報源から科学ニュースを入手して科学報道にかかわる取材活動を行なっているか、記者クラブに属していないことの弊害の有無について聞き取り調査を行った。その結果、記者クラブに属していないことによる弊害は多少なりとも認められるが、これまでに報告されている政治や社会的なニュースの報道における記者クラブ制度の弊害とは質的に異なる可能性が示唆された。また、記者クラブに属していないことによる弊害や記者クラブを介した情報の入手が不要な背景には、記者クラブに加盟する報道機関とそうでない報道機関とでは、報道する内容や報道機関としての役割が異なっている可能性が確認された。
