本年度に計画していたインドネシアでの発掘調査はコロナの影響を受け、年度内に実施することができなかった。そこでこれまでの研究・発掘調査により収集されていた更新世期人類の石器や動物利用、島嶼移住に関わる考古・人類学的資料の分析と整理を積極的に進め、その成果をQuaternary Internationalなどの国際学術誌で公表した。また比較の視点からは、東南アジアやオセアニアの熱帯島嶼環境と類似性の高い、亜熱帯島嶼となる琉球列島の先島諸島に注目し、その中心的位置を占める宮古島と石垣島での洞窟遺跡の発掘調査を実施した。これらの発掘では、とくに宮古島でのツヅキスピアブ洞窟遺跡で土器片や魚骨などを伴う炉跡の検出を行ったほか、その周囲で人骨も出土が確認され、本科研の目的を遂行する上で重要な発見があった。一方、石垣島の白保D洞遺跡では、上層に数メートルに及ぶ津波堆積層が検出され、その発掘に時間を要し、今年度の調査では更新世層には到達できなかった。しかし、国内外でも事例のない内陸洞窟における厚い津波堆積層とその形成プロセスに関わる考古・地質学的資料を多く収集できたことは大きな成果と認識できる。これらの研究からは、当時の人類集団による島嶼移住や生業戦略の復元にもアプローチすることができ、更新世期サピエンスによる先島諸島への拡散問題の解明のほか、この島嶼域へと移住した人類集団の土器や埋葬文化についての考古・人類学的資料の分析を進めることができた。一方、洞窟堆積や古環境復元においては洞窟内堆積土壌のOSL年代測定による検討の試みや、顕微鏡をもちいた土壌のサンプリング分析により、よりミクロな時間軸での洞窟形成の把握を目的としたデータ収集も行うことができた。
