项目摘要

本年度も国内での関連調査に切り替え、九州における中国製仏教美術作例として、いわゆる薩摩塔の実地調査を行った。薩摩塔は、福岡、佐賀、長崎、鹿児島の各県に所在する他、近年、大阪の堺においても発見・報告された。そのような分布地の文化史的背景、中国産石材と目されていること、塔の浮彫尊像の特徴から、およそ12世紀～14世紀の中国で制作され、日本にもたらされたという見解が呈されている。また、大徳寺本「五百羅漢図」に描かれる宝塔（卵塔）と、薩摩塔の形状が類似することから、南宋の明州との関わりが想定され、浙江地域における舎利信仰を背景とした薩摩塔理解へと広がりつつある。研究代表者と分担者は、これまでに高麗・遼・金の仏塔の浮彫尊像および群像形式の仏教尊像について研究・報告してきたが、こうした視点により、高麗・金・元の石造浮図から朝鮮王朝の卵型石造浮図への展開、琉球王朝の蓮蕾型宝塔への展開、遼・金の仏塔・経幢における群像形式の構成パターンとそのプログラムなどとの関連も考慮に入れる必要があると考えるに至った。また、『九天応元雷声普化天尊説玉枢宝経』など、元代に編集され、明さらに朝鮮王朝においても制作されるほど流布した版本に登場する神将形像など、いくつかのメディアにおいて関連する特徴を点的に見出すことができること、薩摩塔の浮彫初尊のオリジナルの形態からの崩れが早く出現していることなどを総合的に判断することにより、制作地、制作年代、建立目的などについて、新たな方向性を射程に含める必要があるのではないかとの着想を得るに至った。しかし、本年度は網羅的な作例調査および史料収集に及んだものの、個々の具体的分析にまでは十分に至ることができなかった。また、研究分担者の急逝により、東南アジア地域の作例との比較および教理学的な図像分析が頓挫している。継続して取り組み、次年度にまとめて成果報告を行う予定である。
