本研究は日本語の複合語における形態音韻論的プロセスを通して音韻論と形態論の関わりを明らかにすることを目的にした。昨年度は、母音交替と連濁のデータベースを作成し、統計的に分析し、複合語の要素の音韻論的長さ（拍数）と関係していることがわかった。今年度は、上記の長さの効果が一定の長さを超えると振る舞いが変わる「カテゴリカル」であるか、要素が長くなるにつれて振る舞いが少しずつ変わる「グラディエント」であるかを調べるために、再度データベースを統計的に分析し、グラディエントな効果のほうがデータをよく説明できる結果を得た。そして、日本語母語話者に新しい複合語の読み方を選んでもらう実験を行い、カテゴリカルとグラディエントな効果を両方観察した。つまり、2拍以下と3拍以上の要素で有意差があり、1拍と2拍、3拍と4拍の間にも有意差があった。データベースの統計分析と実験のデータを基に理論分析を提案した。連濁における長さのカテゴリカルな効果について、韻律句の境目が強い位置のため、連濁が起こりやすいということがローゼンの法則で予測されている。母音交替について、一つの韻律句からなる複合語のほうに現れやすいという、逆の現象が見られるため、交替する形が単独で使用されず、接辞のような振る舞いをし、独自の韻律句を形成することが回避されると提案した。そして、グラディエントな効果を接辞を複合語の端と合わせる調列制約で説明した。提案した制約を利用した最大エントロピーモデルを実験のデータで学習させ、モデルの学習可能性を証明できた。複合語における音韻的長さの効果が先行研究でよく指摘されてきたが、その効果が全てカテゴリカルであり、グラディエントな効果が報告されたのは本研究が初めてである。また、形態論のモジュールが音韻論的長さの情報にアクセスできないため、音韻論のモジュールでも異形態の選択が可能であるということも証明できた。
