本研究は、平成23（2011）年に「公文書管理法」が施行された日本において、これまで映像資料のアーカイブズ機関への移管・保存が十分に進まなかった理由を、他国の制度との比較分析を通じて歴史的に明らかにし、映像資料の適切な保存に必要とされる要件を提示することを目的とする。COVID-19の感染拡大に伴い、調査を予定していた国内外の文書館・図書館等がいずれも閉鎖されてしまったため、令和2年度は当初の研究計画を一部変更し、以下の3点に重点を置いて研究を進めた。1.大量の映像資料群を所蔵する米国国立公文書館を対象に、草創期の1930～50年代を軸として、映像資料に係る諸制度について調査を行った。調査は、先行研究の把握のほか、当時刊行された同館年報、報告書、論文、書籍等を用いた文献研究を中心に実施した。並行して、同館が1990年代に提供した視聴覚記録全般の取り扱いを示したガイドについても調査し、米国において公的に推奨される視聴覚記録のライフサイクル管理の基準について検証した。2.上記のガイドでは、映像資料とその文脈(コンテクスト)を保証する制作資料とを一体的に取り扱う記録管理が示されているが、両者が分割管理された日本の個別事例として、岩波映画製作所の制作資料群（一社・記録映画保存センター所蔵）を対象に分析調査を行った。具体的には、制作資料に記録された作品メタデータと、現在用いられている作品目録の内容とを対照させ、制作資料のみに記されている情報の有用性をはかる検証を行った。3.文字資料と映像資料の一体的管理の必要性という研究視点に立ち、戦前に公的機関の研究活動の過程で作成され、その後に散逸した映画フィルム（『（霧）』、正題不詳）について、残された文書記録（一次資料）からその存在を明らかにした。上記の研究成果として、学会・研究会において2回報告し、論文1本と資料紹介1本を寄稿した。
