项目摘要

昨年度は、シェイクスピア作品を購入・使用した著名人を対象に、演劇本がいかに彼らの活動に寄与したかを探る目的で研究を行った。特に力を入れたのは、フィラデルフィアの公立図書館に収蔵されている『シェイクスピア作品集』初版（1623、以下Ｆと略記）のかつての所蔵者ジョン・ミルトンについての研究であった。今年度は、そのＦという書物そのものにさらなる焦点を深く当て、先行研究で未だ光が当てられていないＦの植字と印刷に関する新たな研究を行った。とりわけ注力したのは、『ロミオとジュリエット』の最終ページ、および『トロイラスとクレシダ』の冒頭ページの印刷に大きな影響を与えたジャガード印刷所と編集者ヘンリー・ウォリーとの間で起きたアクシデント、そしてそれが及ぼした印刷の遅れ、そして植字工によって引き起こされた不規則なテクストの生成についてであった。この印刷所外の揉め事のせいでＦの印刷は数週間遅れ、結果、Ｆは第一刷から第三刷までに漸次分かれて出版されるという予想外の展開を引き起こした。とりわけ第二刷においては、第一刷で作成したが廃棄が決まったページを「再利用」せざるを得ない状況が生まれ、そのため『ヘンリー八世』と『トロイラスとクレシダ』との間に、『ロミオとジュリエット』の最終ページが紛れ込むこととなり、その１ページに印刷所が大きな「×」印を付して発売したため、ジャガード印刷所にとって印刷技法上の大きな瑕疵を露呈してしまったことを論じた。また『トロイラスとクレシダ』の冒頭ページの印刷がやり直しになったことで、このページが各々別の機会に、二人の異なる植字工によって植字されたことから生じた「本文上の差異」について詳細に論じた。この研究は論文にまとめられ、2022年度末（2023年3月）に日本シェイクスピア協会が発刊する『Shakespeare Journal』に掲載された。

Last year, the company purchased, used, and researched the project. The first edition of the "Collection of Works"(1623, abbreviated as F below) was published in the public library. This year, the focus of the book is deep, and the research is new.
