项目摘要

本研究は、英語を媒介用語とした（English as a medium of instruction、以下「EMI」と表記）授業を行う日本の大学において、異なるステークホルダーがEMIの利点と弊害をどのように認識しているか、またその認識に相違点と共通点があるのかを質的研究手法を用いて調査することを目的としている。比較のため日本の大学に加え、EMIの導入の歴史や状況、英語の社会的役割の異なるスウェーデンの大学からのデータを共同研究者を通じて収集し、EMIにおける問題点を広い視点で考察する。研究初年度より新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響で様々な制約の中で研究を行なってきたが、2022年度は徐々に研究活動の枠が広がり、当初計画に近い形で研究を行えるようになった。2022年度の実績としては、EMI準備語学コースの教員からオンラインインタビューでデータを収集し分析した。その結果、語学コースの教員の多くはEMIのニーズを明示的には把握していないことが示され、今後の改善点として、語学準備コースの目的をより具体的に教員と共有する必要性があることが明らかになった。研究発表では、2022年度には、前年度に収集していた国際学生からのデータを元にBritish Association of Applied Linguistics学会でポスター発表を行い、優秀ポスターの一つに選出された。また、研究初年度よりスウェーデンの研究グループとのオンライン研究会を定期的に開催し、収集するデータのすり合わせ、分析状況などの情報交換を行ってきたが、 2022年度7月にはスウェーデンの共同研究者が来日し、初めて対面での研究会を実施した。2022年度後半には、スウェーデンチームと共同で発表と論文の作成を開始し、2023年度の発表に向けて作業を継続している。
