本研究では、列島社会の山里とその生業が多様な展開を持っていた点を重視し、近世において特徴をもった4地域を選定している。Ａ焼畑耕作など多様な生業から「林業地帯」へと変貌した阿波・木頭地域（町田哲）、Ｂ巨大都市江戸への薪炭供給地であった房総・養老川流域（後藤雅知）、Ｃ列島各地への有数な材木供給地であった南信濃・天竜川中流域（羽田真也）、Ｄ藩の専売制の中で、西日本有数の紙生産地となった周防・山代地域（森下徹）である。3年目にあたる本年度も、各地域の一次史料を調査・分析し、その特質を内在的に解明することに注力した。Ａ地域の木頭村湯浅家文書の目録作成を進め、Ｂ地域では大多喜町永島家文書の未整理部分の目録作成調査および撮影調査を進めた。Ｃ地域では座光寺村庄屋古瀬今村家文書（約4,400点）の現状記録調査を継続するとともに、大平紙屋文書（約1,000点）の写真撮影を行った。Ｄ地域では、対象を薪の伐採・販売や石炭の採掘にも拡大し、主に山口県文書館所蔵史料によりながら関連史料を収集した。研究の基礎となる重要な歴史資料を調査できた意義は大きい。また、研究会（オンライン）を4回実施し、各地域での調査研究の成果を共有した。成果内容としては、町田（地域Ａ）は17世紀末の村の荒廃状況と入植過程を解明し、あわせて当該地域の歴史動態を総合的に論じる論考を作成した。後藤（地域Ｂ）は御林とその周辺の地域社会について、薪炭生産を切口に論じる論文を発表した。羽田（地域Ｃ）は地域社会構造の一端を庄屋の経営や寺院の出開帳のあり方から分析を進め、さらに当該地域の駄賃稼について新たな知見を発表した。森下（地域Ｄ）は石炭山の生産・流通構造とその変化をさらに明らかにした。なお、研究会に新たな若手・中堅研究者の参加を得たことは、今後の山里研究のプラットホーム構築にむけた前進として特筆される。
