アルジェリア出張が困難であった故、研究計画に沿って既に収集ずみの新聞資料の分析とチュニジアへの調査出張を行った。チュニジアでは、1861年憲法の史料調査とその分析によって、保護領支配という植民地支配の在り方が多様な改革主義的運動を可能にしたこと、他方で直轄植民地支配を受けたアルジェリアの民族運動、独立運動がそれとは異なる武装闘争による歩みを強いられたことが明らかになった。研究目的としてかかげた政治的ダブル・スタンダードの検証のため、アルジェリアの民族運動と独立運動に大きな影響を与えた、1945年5月のいわゆる「5月8日事件」がどのように扱われていたのか、ということに着目して新聞資料の分析を行った。とくにスーフィー教団とともに道徳、倫理の改革運動をすすめたイスラーム改革派グループのアルジェリア・ウラマー協会の雑誌、al-Basa’irの記事を参照し、ウラマー協会の「5月8日事件」に対する姿勢を考察した。ウラマー協会は、毎年５月上旬発行の同誌において、「5月8日事件」を大きくとりあげ、それを植民地支配に対する批判材料としていた。たとえば、同誌79号（1949年５月9日発行）では、１面で「Dhikra thamin May（５月８日の記念日）」とする記事を掲載し、「実に植民地支配の時代は、不正とテロリズムと、自由と人間の尊厳に対する攻撃の時代である。植民地支配の歴史のページの全てが、抑圧と流血と才能の鎮圧の称賛、自由の絞殺の称賛である・・・。」と述べて、植民地支配に対する激しい批判の姿勢を表明している。ここには明確なウラマー協会の反植民地主義的姿勢がみてとれる。この結果をふまえれば、「5月8日事件」に沈黙するスーフィー教団の新聞にみられる政治的出来事に対するダブル・スタンダードな姿勢の検討が重要な意味をもってくることが明らかとなった。
