金子元氏とともに Markoff-Lagrange スペクトルの乗法的な類似をPisot 数を底とする場合に研究した。この研究は特殊な記号力学系上に定まる関数の最適化問題に翻訳され、とくに禁止語が徐々に減り初めて非周期無限語が生ずるような臨界点の研究が重要となる。数論と記号力学系の間を繋ぐ公式が非常に重要な役割を果たす。釜江氏、金子氏とともにこの発展として一般の指数的に増大する線形回帰数列を扱う研究を行い。Pisot 数に限らない枠組みを作ることに成功した。関連してスツルム語とバランス語が臨界点の記述に現れる。スツルム語は無理回転のコードとして現れる無限語で、複雑度最小の非周期無限語としても特徴づけられる。この間の研究により Markoff-Lagrange スペクトルの研究を通じてバランス語の数え上げと数論の関係も明らかになってきた。バランス語のパラメータの存在する区間を指定したときの長さの増大に関する漸近挙動もわかり、さらに Riemann 予想とのつながりも見えてきた。スツルム語は語の組み合わせ論で基本的であるが、このような数論的な文脈での研究は少ない。筑波大の博士課程の Wen Fan 氏、浜田忠久氏とこれらの発展に関する研究を進めた。関連して金子氏とともに、円分多項式の数論的な問題を解くことができた。B.Loridant, J.Thuswaldner との共同で連続整数digit でできるタイルの位相構造、とくに切断点の存在に関する特徴付けを行った。さらに永井氏、J.Y.Lee との共同研究では、自己相似タイル張りのパターンにたいして等差的な構造がいかに現れるかを組織的に研究した。H.Hachem 氏との共同でSalem 数によるベータ展開に対応する記号力学系が sofic になる条件に関して調べた。この研究は離散回転の軌道とも関連していることが分かった。
