近代日本の視覚障害者教育史の主要な資料である近代日本語点字資料は、同時期の主に歴史的仮名遣いによる漢字仮名混じり表記と異なり、６点点字によってほぼ表音式で表記されているため、近代共通語成立期における日本語を音韻・語彙・語法・表記・方言にわたって近代共通語の研究資料としても非常に高い価値を有している。しかしながら、従来、近代の点字資料は言語資料としての重要性が特に言語研究の分野にはほとんど知られていなかった。特に、触読文字であるため点字の摩滅の恐れがあり、また紙の劣化の恐れもあるため研究者が利用しやすい形態で公開されることが稀であった。そのため、全文ほぼ一字一音の点字で、また近代の学術・教育・文化に関わる語彙が豊富で、学術用語の漢字音の漢音・呉音や清濁・連濁の変遷を知る上でも貴重な用例の多い点字雑誌『むつぼしのひかり』を中心的資料として、目視によって点字の凹凸が確認できる画像データのための写真撮影とデータのコーパス化、テキストマイニングによって点字資料の文体・語彙・表記を検討することにして、コロナ禍のため現時点で得ている資料によって可能な範囲で分析を行った。ことに、鍼灸・医学などの学術講演の記録の点字を検討することによって医学・科学用語などの漢字音・外来語の表記、ワア行五段動詞連用形の音便形など講演者の言語形成地の方言の反映の可能性、また、それらの分析の前提となる点字による促音表記の語彙・文法による法則性の有無などについて検討を加えて、同時期の点字資料における実態との比較を行っている。また、点字を解読する作業に備えて晴眼者で点字を読める人材の育成を行った。
