项目摘要

本研究では、日本人英語学習者が英語イントネーションをどのように習得していくのかを観察している。特に英語イントネーションにおいてコミュニケーション上重要とされている音調核をどの音節に置くのかということと、イントネーションの音調を伝えたいメッセージに応じて使い分けることができるのか、ということを見ている。まず、英語のプロソディー習得の時に問題となる母語(日本語）の影響や英語イントネーションの種類別難易度と習得の順序が存在するのかを考察すべく、音声データを録音し分析することを続けてきた。その結果、英語のイントネーションの種類による習得の順序（難易度）があることが分かった。また、イントネーションには構成要素が存在し、それらが相互に作用すると、あるイントネーションパターンが実現しやすく、またあるものが難しくなることが分かった。2022年度に行った研究では、中・上級レベルの英語学習者が、どのような順序でイントネーションを習得していくのかを明らかにし、しかもイントネーションが教授可能であるという示唆を得た。特に核配置と音調は発話の意味に関わる事項であり、正しく教授することが英語コミュニケーションを正確なものにするので、効果的な指導方法に結びつけられることが明らかになったのは、収穫であった。この間、ウェールズ語話者の英語イントネーションを研究している分担者は、長文の読み上げ音声を分析した。その結果、イントネーション句頭部の強音節では、標準イギリス英語では減衰と捉えられる比較的小さな下降を示すのに対して、ウェールズ英語では同様に下降するものの、下降幅が大きいことや後続弱音節で再上昇することから、減衰による下降とは異なるものであることが明らかになった。また、ウェールズ英語内においても、高齢層と若年層とで差があることも分かった。
