幕末の儒者、齋藤拙堂の漢文著作である『拙堂文集』、ならびに『経世文編抄』批語を精読することで、とくに「革命」に関する認識を通して、拙堂の中国認識について検討した。拙堂にとって、易姓革命は「忠誠」というモラルの否定、ないし少なくとも「忠誠」を脅かす危機であると認識されていた。それに対して、一貫した揺るぎなき「忠誠」によって特徴付けられる「皇国」＝日本の伝統の価値が称揚されることになる。このような観点から見るならば、王朝がたびたび革命によって交替した中国の歴史には、いわば反面教師としての学びしかないと考えられていた。幕末を生きた拙堂にとって、もはや中国は批判的な学びの対象としてしか意識されていなかったということになる。ただし、だからと言って、拙堂が歴代中国王朝の聖王をすべて否定的に評価していたというわけでもない。たとえば殷周革命については、彼は以下のような論理によって周の文王・武王を擁護、ないし正統化しようとする。拙堂は、周の文王・武王がもともと殷王朝の「臣下」ではなかったという説を支持することで、殷周革命という歴史認識を否定する。はじめから「臣下」ではなかったとするならば、それは「主」である殷を弑逆した「革命」には当たらない。拙堂はこのような論理によって、中国古代の聖王の時代を「救済」するのである。こうした結論から導かれる次の課題は、幕末の儒者による「革命」認識であり、そのフィルターを通して認識される「中国」なのであると言えよう。
