项目摘要

農耕、製茶、捕鯨、製紙、織物、鉱山など近世産業絵巻関係史料の調査を引き続き実施した。それらの制作背景や目的は、狩野派など職業絵師の画題として、生業を継承するための記録として、幕府や藩の殖産興業との関わり、など多様であった。制作年代は、狩野派など職業絵師が17世紀には画題としていた農耕や製茶の絵巻を除けば、18世紀以降が大半を占める。これらの絵巻の制作は、当然ながら産業の発展が契機とはなったが、幕府や藩の殖産興業との関わりという視点で見れば、必ずしもその盛期を描いたものではなかった。幕府領鉱山である佐渡金銀山の絵巻を例に見ると、金銀産出量が激減していた1730年代頃に制作が開始されており、その現状を記録・報告する目的が推察される。肥前国唐津藩における20余の産業の様子を唐津藩水野家の家臣・木崎盛標が安永２年（1773）～天明６年（1786）にかけて描いた「肥前州産物図考」も藩財政の危機と殖産興業への関心が背景にあったと考えられている。また、越後小千谷縮は、江戸中期頃に最盛期を迎えたとされるが、その製造工程を描いた「縮布製造之真図」は明治18年（1885）の制作であり、近代化の波にさらされるなかで、伝統的な織物産業の様子を記録として残そうとする制作意図も推察された。また、鉱山絵巻では、最盛期を過ぎた江戸後期に絵巻の制作や写本化が顕著となる傾向がうかがわれた。この背景には、地域産業や博物学などに対する関心の高まりとともに、絵巻の制作を担う層や、それを受容する層の拡大といった文化の大衆化、地方文化の発展とも密接に関わると推察された。以上の成果の一部は、新潟県立歴史博物館の令和４年度秋季企画展「生業絵巻尽」において還元した。
