江戸中期から作製がはじまったとされる佐渡金銀山絵巻は多数の所在が知られているが,作者・年代・成立事情等が記されるのは稀で,それらの分類を明らかにすることが課題である。本年度は,東京国立博物館や個人が所蔵する原史料10点を調査・撮影した。また写真等で11点の絵巻史料のデータを入手し,計21点の構成・内容等を分析した。現在所在が確認されている佐渡金銀山絵巻は100点ほどと思われるが,これまでに17年度30点,18年度32点,19年度21点,計83点の調査を行なった(これ以外に,本研究交付申請以前10点を調査済)。さらに,鉱山技術書等の文献調査を行い,絵巻に描かれる諸事象(坑内における各種排水器具等)の年代的検討を行なった。この結果,絵巻巻頭の表現等から年代順に大きく4分類でき,さらにそれらの分類のなかでもいくつかに小分類できることが明らかになった。これにより,全国に伝わる個々の佐渡金銀山絵巻が,絵巻群全体の中でどのような位置づけになるのかの指標を提示することが可能となった。そして,このような佐渡金銀山絵巻の内容の相違は,絵巻が江戸中期から幕末期にいたる長期間にわたって,新技術の導入,作業工程や管理体制の変化等に伴い,内容の一部が更新されて作製され続けたことを反映していることを指摘した。佐渡金銀山絵巻作製の目的については,江戸中期以降に佐渡奉行やその補佐役である組頭の交代ごとに作製,提出されたという従来の説を踏襲しながら,その他様々な目的で書き写されたことを指摘した。
