本研究は、先行する2つの科学研究費による基礎研究、発展的研究で先鞭がつけられており、問題解決の方策、手順はある程度確立している。具体的には１．調査領域の寺社史料の調査研究（主に什物帳を中心とした調査）。２．美術・工芸・考古分野の遺品研究はそれぞれの研究成果を援用、協業しながらデータ集積（伝世資料、出土資料の両面からデータ収集）という手法を採ることにしている。方法は、実査、撮影、調書作成が主体となる。考古遺物の場合は参考遺品が量的に多いためデータ集積と入力のためのアルバイト雇用により調査をおこなった。研究手法はこれまでの研究で確立しており、基礎研究であるため、研究の遅れを修正したほかは研究方針も大きな変更はなかった。すなわち、2年目から4年にかけて、畿内、中国、四国、九州地方を対象とし、近年研究の進展がめざましい島根県益田市のなども視野に入れた調査を行い、一方の遺物については、中世都市遺跡として知られる草戸千軒（広島県福山市）の文物も調査対象としていた。しかし、2020年2月以来、資料所蔵機関、博物館、個別寺院史料の調査、および伝世文物との関連調査が、コロナウイルス蔓延の影響で、実施不可能となり、結果として具体的な出張を伴う調査自体の多くが未実施になってしまったことが影響している。九州については福岡県、大分県の県立博物館、資料館を中心に調査を行うことができた。美術・工芸・考古分野の遺品研究はそれぞれの研究成果を援用、協業しながらデータ集積に努めたが、県レベルの埋蔵文化財センターの協力も仰ぐ予定であったため、調査未実施の機関が多くなってしまった。調査が実施できた一部寺院資料の相当分については、本年度も新たな発見もあり、研究の方向性に確信を持つことができた。特に什物帳の分析については予定どおり個別研究を行うことができた。
