本研究では、見た目上は同一の文であっても文脈により意味解釈が複数存在するものについて「曖昧な文」と呼ぶ。この「曖昧な文」について、外国語学習者（英語学習中の日本語話者）が学習中の言語の曖昧な文を母語話者のように解釈できるのかについて研究している。母語話者による曖昧な文の解釈は「議論中の質問 (Question under Discussion, QUD)」という語用論的概念に大きな影響をうける。本研究では母語話者および学習者におけるQUDの影響を、実験により検証する。本年度は、（１）焦点が文法的に制限される "only" を使った英文と、（２）焦点が文法的には決まらないが文脈により好まれる解釈が変化する"always"を使った英文と、（３）尺度推意の計算が文脈により行われやすくなる英文を用いて曖昧な文を作成し、実験を行った。実験では、QUDを操作することにより、被験者である学習者の英文解釈が影響を受けるかを観察した。実験では２グループを設定した。自然に文脈を考慮した解釈を提示してもらうために、英文を読み自ら和訳をしてもらうタスクを課したグループと、よりノイズの少ない結果を得るため、異なる解釈を選択肢として呈示して自らの解釈と近いほうを選択するタスクを課したグループである。さらに、英語の知識を測る英文穴埋め課題・コミュニケーション力・会話力を測るアンケートを同時に実施し、QUDの影響がどのような要素と相関するかを分析している。

In this study, the meaning of the same text is explained by the existence of multiple contexts. This "ambiguous text" is a topic for foreign language learners (Japanese speakers in English learning) to study and understand ambiguous language in native speakers. The concept of "Question under Discussion (QUD)" has a great influence on native speakers. This study provides evidence of the effects of QUD on native speakers and learners.
