项目摘要

本研究は、近世日本の具体的な災害の事例から「災害死者」の発生・埋葬・慰霊の様子を考察し、近世災害死者の特質を解明することを目的とするものであった。そのため、文献資料の調査、供養塔や地蔵像などに関する現地調査、博物館・資料館の災害関連の絵画資料の調査を行う予定であったが、コロナ事態の勃発により、資料調査や現地調査に多くの制限が生じた。感染拡大地域への移動の制限や、寺院や資料館、博物館の休館、また対面によるインタビュー調査が難しくなり、最初の計画のとおりに調査を行うことはできなった。そうした制限の中で、可能な限り文献調査と現地調査を行うことにした。まず、「明暦の大火」に関する調査では、火災死者の集団埋葬地に建てられた回向院の慰霊碑の調査を行い、今まで不明確であった銘文の内容を明らかにした。「享保の飢饉」に関しては、福岡県と佐賀県で飢饉死者のために建てられた供養塔と地蔵像の調査を行い、その位置と銘文の内容を確認することができた。「浅間山大噴火」に関しては、群馬県と長野県にある資料館などを訪問し、文献資料を確認するとともに、現地にある災害死者の供養塔と死者供養を行っている寺院の確認を行った。東北地方では、数回にわたって、青森県、岩手県、宮城県、福島県などで「天明・天保の大飢饉」と関連があると思われる、飢饉死者供養塔と地蔵像の調査を行い、その位置や銘文の内容を確認した。そして熊本県の天草と長崎県の島原半島では「島原大変肥後迷惑」の供養塔に関する現地調査なども行った。コロナ禍の中で研究を行うことに様々な限界があったが、人々との接触を減らしつつ、個人で可能な現地調査と文献調査を行い、写真撮影などを中心に資料を収集し、その資料を分析する形で全体的な研究を行った。その成果は『近世日本の災害と宗教――呪術・終末・慰霊・象徴』（吉川弘文館、2021年）を通して、まとめて発表することができた。
