Small proteins are encoded by small open reading frames (sORFs) and consist of around 60 amino acids. Diverse cellular functions have been linked to small proteins including cell division, transport and kinase regulation, morphogenesis and stress response. In our project, we will investigate the structure and dynamics of small proteins and their complexes by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. We will continue our fruitful collaborations within SPP2002 with more than ten different groups. Beside characterizing the invidual small proteins using a workflow successfully established in the first funding period, we will also put focus on investigating complexes of small protein with (larger) proteins, DNA, RNA or lipids.
