本研究の三年目は、文学における動物という課題に力を注ぐ一方、宮沢賢治とW.フォークナーの比較研究を継続しながら、発表を行うとともに、さらなる宮沢賢治の童話の可能性を探った。まず、「動物」に関する研究としては、アニマル・スタディーズの理論を踏まえ、賢治童話における「動物」の表象を考察し、その他の作品との比較において宮沢賢治の独自性を考慮した。9月に行われた、世界文学・語圏横断ネットワーク主催の研究集会では、「豚」の表象にテーマを絞り、宮沢賢治の「〔フランドン農学校の豚〕」（生前未発表、1922頃）や、ボフミル・フラバル著の『剃髪式』（1974）、さらにはミッシェル・フェイバー著の『アンダー・ザ・スキン』（2000年）の三つの作品を比較しながら、文学における人間と動物の種間関係を考察した発表を行った。この課題の続きとしては、3月に立命館大学で開催された、シンポジウム『いま問い直す、宮沢賢治と動物』の企画と実施に携わった。現代、人間中心主義的な世界観に疑問を投げかけるアニマル・スタディーズが勢いを増していくなか、その作品において動物を取り入れることによって、非人間中心的な世界観を発展させてきた宮沢賢治の創作活動に着眼しながら、その作品に登場する「動物」の表象について議論し、動物の視点から書かれた文学の可能性と限界を考察し、宮沢賢治文学が与えられるインパクトを探った。一方では、宮沢賢治とW.フォークナーの比較研究のつづきとしては、「空間」という観点から、「イーハトヴ」また「ヨクナパトーファ」として虚構化され、文学的空間となった岩手とアメリカ南部のミシシッピにおいて、近代化が進む時代において、自然に対する人間の態度や人間と動物の関係、さらに植民地化・都市化による土着民の環境変化に関する表現における共通点と相違点を分析し、その成果をロンドン市で行われた国際学会で発表した。
