Cognitively Stimulating Activities for Successful Aging: Searching for New Pathways

In the three and a half months (May 2019 - September the 15th, 2019), we finalized several papers that had been submitted previously (see Section 10). The first paper (Sala et al., 2019; Plos One) was a structural equation model (SEM) about the relationship between engagement in leisure activities and successful aging (preserved wellbeing, cognitive function, and physical function). Engagemnt in leisure activities appeared to be a fair predictor of successful aging. The second paper (Sala, Aksayli, et al., 2019) was a meta-analysis on the impact of WM training on older adults’ cognitive function. The positive effect of this training programme seemed to be slim to null, especially in those studies that implemented a cogntively demanding control-group activity to control for placebo effects. The third (Sala, Tatlidil, and Gobet, 2019), was about the effects of exergames (cognitive training + physical activiy) on older adults’ cognitive skills. Again, no compelling effect of exergame programmes was observed. Also, we collected more data for the Igo players project (current total subjects=100).
