项目摘要

本研究は、14～16世紀初頭のエジプトを対象として、①諸史料に見えるエジプト社会の災害認識と心性、②環境認識とその変容の二点を考察することで、中世イスラーム社会における環境と人間社会の相互関係を検討することを目的としている。22年度には、エジプトでの史料調査を行いつつ主に①にあたる研究を進めた。従来の研究では、年代記等に見られる災害記録は災害発生時についての経済状況や、災害そのものを再構成するための情報源としての利用が主であった。しかし、当時の年代記には、過去に大規模な被害をもたらした災異を想起・言及しながら書かれたものや、年代記作家個人の見解が書かれたもの、過去の災害について詠われたアラブ詩を挿入したものなど、その記述内容は経済史的な要素に留まらず、災害下でのイスラーム社会の人々の心性をも含む。そこで、初年度はこれらの歴史叙述を分析することにより、災害に対する認識や災害の記憶、災害以前・以後の社会について明らかにすることを目的に史料分析を進めた。その結果、過去の災害の記憶がカイロの社会に根強く残り、アラブ詩の形に保存されながら繰り返し人々の間で想起されていたことが窺えたが、詩の読解に時間がかかり十分な分析を行うことができなかった。23年度は、海外での調査によって不足する史料を補いつつ、中世後期エジプトにおける災害認識とメンタリティについての論文としてまとめる予定である。②については、エジプトの地理や気候、街の美点等について書かれた『美質の書』を用い、15世紀に書かれた作品の分析を行った。同時期の年代記等にも見られるナイル川の特徴や気候について、地誌的な側面と共通する認識があることは窺えたが、②を明らかにするには更に時代の異なる作品を比較することが必要である。まだ写本のままの史料も複数あることから、23年度はエジプトでの史料調査とあわせて内容の比較分析を進める。
