Research on the Development of Plasma Jets Using Solis Fuels

Plasma jets are widely used as a heat source which can cover the temperature range from 3000K to 20000K. Our original new type of plasma jet is operated by gases produced by sublimation of solids. The solids are so placed that the main arc discharges induce the sublimation of solids as well as the augmentation of plasma flames, that is, the gas is generated on demand and no additional electrodes for sublimation of solids are necessary. Experimental results showed that ignitions and extinctions are repeatedly possible, and instantaneous with the application or interruption of arc discharge, employing teflon as the solid, and that sublimation rates of solids are controllable by the power supplied. The efficiency of this type of plasma jet was comparable with that of usual gas plasma jet and was still improved by employing composite type of solids or consumption type of electrodes of which evaporation gases react and evolve chemical reaction energy.
