项目摘要

本研究は、近代の英文仏書の整備を行い、その全体像の素描することで「仏教モダニズム」の動態を分析するものである。2022年度は、①英文仏書資料の蒐集と整理②本研究の分析方法にかんする発表と論文の執筆を行い、英文仏書の通史を描くための準備作業に取り組んだ。①英文仏書資料の蒐集と整理：東京大学・国立国会図書館の調査を通じて、明治初期のキリスト教系英文雑誌 Chrysanthemumと重要な先行研究となる博士論文の閲覧ができた。また、龍谷大学図書館でも同様の調査を行い、英文雑誌の資料蒐集とデジタルデータ化を進めた。これらの蒐集した資料に基づく目録を最終年度に発表予定である。②本研究の分析方法にかんする発表と論文の執筆：初年度となる2022年度は、英訳史が近代仏教研究にいかに資することができるのかを課題とし、発表と論文執筆を行った。たとえば、「日本仏教の欧米進出ー英文テキストをてがかりにー」（第1回近代南アジア民族誌研究会(中央大学), 2022年7月）と題して、発表を行った。考察を通して、近代化のなかで日本の仏教者たちが西洋世界に向けて、戦略的な思想の発信を行っていた事実を紹介した。さらに、“The Construction of History in English Translations of Shin Buddhist Texts: Through the Creation of the Bibliography of Japanese Buddhist Texts”（The Journal of World Buddhist Cultures (JWBC) 6 2023年3月）と題する論文を投稿し、英文テキストが、アジアとヨーロッパの共同作業である「仏教モダニズム」の実態を解明するために重要な分析視角になり得る可能性を示唆した。

This study aims at analyzing the dynamics of modern English books, including their preparation, sketching and sketching.
