项目摘要

本研究の目的は、20世紀前半のアメリカ文学において、同時代の視覚メディアである絵画、写真、映画が作品内で担う機能を、「情動（affect）」という観点から明らかにすることである。文学テクストにおいて逸脱的な身体性の諸相が表象されるとき、それが同時代の視覚メディアの発展と密接に関連していること、そしてそのような文学と視覚メディアの交錯がテクストにおける情動の前景化をもたらしていることを示す。2022年度は、ウィラ・キャザーの作品研究を、『教授の家』をはじめとする中期作品や、書簡、エッセイなど関連テクストを中心におこなった。そのうえで、『教授の家』における絵画の機能について、1920年代アメリカの物質主義的潮流に位置づけつつ、キャザー作品における絵画が、刹那的な感情を身体的次元で喚起する情動の発現の場として措定されている可能性について検証をすすめた。研究の成果は英語論文にまとめ、学術誌に投稿した。また、情動という観点からキャザーと興味深い関連を示す作家であるケイト・ショパンの主要作品について、とりわけ視覚的イメージを喚起する音楽というモチーフに着目してシンポジウムで発表をおこなった。また、作品研究と並行して、情動理論にかんする文献の蒐集と分析をおこなった。マルタ・フィグレロウィクスやジェイン・スレイルキルといった研究者による議論を精査しながら、20世紀アメリカ文学の主要なテクストにおける空間や身体の表象を情動という観点から整理した。これにより、本研究の理論的基盤を固めることができた。
