2022年度には、ジェイムズ・ジョイスの『ユリシーズ』における嗅覚表象を扱った。5月には「『ユリシーズ』を 嗅 ぐ ――ブルーム の 嗅覚的放浪 と 帰還」というタイトルで日本英文学会全国大会において口頭発表を行い、この内容に基づいて『Osaka Literary Review』に論文「おかえり、ブルーム――『ユリシーズ』における嗅覚的放浪と帰還」を提出した。本論文においては、主人公ブルームがアイルランドのダブリンを放浪する中で様々な香りに導かれつつも、最終的には自らの香り、妻の香りのある家へと帰り着くまでを辿った。次いで、次年度の研究の準備として、ダフネ・デュ＝モーリアの作品を多く紐解きつつ、2月には作家の縁の地であり、作品の舞台にしばしば用いられるイギリスのコーンウォール地方を訪れた。当地でのフィールドワークを通じて、作品に描かれる地理の実際の状況や、香りのあり方などを調べることができた。フィールドワークの後には、デヴォン州エクセターのエクセター大学へと向かい、数日に渡り作家の手稿やタイプ原稿、書簡等を閲覧した。3月には本研究の大きなテーマである香りに関する文献を収集するため、フランスのパリにおいて、サン・ジュヌヴィエーヴ図書館と、公立情報図書館で様々な文献資料を閲覧した。日本国内では入手に時間がかかるフランス語文献を実際に手に取って閲覧した。研究に必要な部分のスキャンデータを入手し、特に重要度の高い文献に関しては帰国後購入することとしたことで、研究資料の入手にかかる時間と、必要のない文献を購入する可能性を削減することができた。また、香り文化への理解を深めるために、フラゴナール香水博物館を訪れ、香水の発展の歴史に触れることができた。3年目に中心的な研究対象となる予定であるL・G・ギボンのスコットランド三部作にも目を通すことができ、研究の下準備ができたと感じている。
