项目摘要

本課題の初年度にあたる2022年度には、研究環境の整備、二次文献の読解、史料調査の３点を中心に、神戸市と米軍との関係性に関する本研究の大枠の深化に努めた。その結果、アメリカ史という、当初想定していた枠組みを超え、トランスナショナル・ヒストリーとして神戸市と米軍との関わりの歴史を考察する必要があるということに気づくことができた。本研究をそうした大きな枠組みからさらに進めることで、米軍をめぐる文化史研究の発展に貢献するのみならず、アメリカ史研究における例外主義を打破し、その歴史をトランスナショナルな文脈から捉えようとする研究群の発展にも寄与したいと考えている。特に、2022年12月に行った神戸市における史料調査は、これまで私が想定していた本研究課題の視座を問い直し、それを発展させる貴重な契機となった。具体的には、明治期から２０世紀後半にかけての神戸市に関する二次文献の閲覧・読解と、２０世紀前半の同市に関する一次史料の収集・閲覧を行った。その結果、同市と米軍をめぐる関係史は当初、アメリカ合衆国史（あるいは日米関係史）の枠組みの中で捉えられると仮定していたが、それよりもむしろ、アジア諸国との関係史も含めたトランスナショナル・ヒストリーとしてこの歴史は捉えるべきであるということが判明した。さらに、2022年11月には国際アメリカ学会（International American Studies Association)の第10回大会において、口頭発表を行った。オンラインでの参加ではあったが、開催地であるインド・ニューデリーのアメリカ研究者や、同じくオンライン参加の研究者らと活発な議論を行うことができ、有益なフィードバックを得ることができた。
