本研究の目的は，日本の企業に在籍する外国人技能実習生を対象に，仕事領域における自己決定理論の仮説の有用性について検証を行うことである。具体的に述べると，外国人技能実習生がどのような仕事動機づけを有するか，仕事動機づけの自己決定性が職務満足感や疲労感，離職意向にどのような影響を及ぼすか，さらに，基本的な心理的欲求（自律性への欲求，有能感への欲求，関係性への欲求）の充足が仕事動機づけの自己決定性に与える影響を明らかにすることである。2022年度では，外国人技能実習生の仕事動機づけに関する検討，仕事動機づけに関する文献調査を主に行った。日本の企業に在籍している外国人技能実習生に対して，「現在の仕事についてどう思いますか」，「なぜ仕事を続けていますか」をめぐって，これまでの日本での仕事や生活について半構造化面接調査を行った。分析対象となった調査協力者の出身国は中国，ベトナムとなり，職種は製造業であった。面接調査で得られたデータを分析したところ，金銭的側面（「借金を返すため」や「将来起業するための資本金を稼ぐため」，「生活を改善するために稼ぎたい」など）に関する内容だけでなく，「将来日本語の先生になりたいので，日本に来た」や「子供の頃から日本に興味があった」，「アニメが好きだから」，「自分が若いからいろいろな国に行ってみて，いろいろなことを経験してみたい」などのような自己決定的な動機づけに関する語りも得られた。この結果は，少なくとも一部の外国人技能実習生は，日本での仕事に楽しさを感じ，現在の仕事の意義を認識していると考えられる。
