The pellicle is the initial protein and glycoprotein-layer which is formed almost instantaneously on all surfaces exposed to the oral fluids. It has protective properties and modulates bacterial colonization and therewith initiation and progression of caries and erosive mineral loss. Optimal prevention of caries and erosions is still a considerable challenge despite the high prevalence of these diseases due to modern diet. In this context innovative biological concepts of high bio-compatibility and sustainability are of increasing relevance. One approach are herbal drugs rich in polyphenols and their components. It has been shown that some herbal extracts modify the ultrastructure of the pellicle yielding a thicker and more electron dense layer. Therewith the protection against erosive noxae is optimized. The aim of the present project is to characterize officinal polyphenolic plant extracts systematically that have not been adopted in preventive dentistry until now. This applies for composition as well as for the impact on bioadhesion-processes and pellicle formation. Thereby, effective plant extracts and plant components will be identified. In a second step, new and simple concepts for preventive dentistry will be developed.
