The Asian monsoon, a pathway from one of the highest polluted regions on Earth into the stratosphere and its impact on the climate is currently a highly discussed topic. Especially enhanced aerosol concentrations in the Asian monsoon anticyclone (ATAL) have recently been found with satellite measurements and have not been detected before 1998. The ATAL has not sufficiently been analyzed yet and is subject of the proposed project. During the past months/year high resolution instruments on board a research aircraft and balloons obtained aerosol measurements in terms of composition, size, shape and concentration exactly in the area of interest, the Asian monsoon. Those new measurements complement the wider picture of satellite based measurements. During the proposed project various satellite measurements and the highly resolved airborne insitu measurements will be combined, compared and analyzed for the properties of the ATAL (quantity, chemical composition and trend). Furthermore, those obtained information will be implemented and contributed to a wider model study comprised of two atmospheric models, improving our knowledge about why the ATAL developed, what its impact is on the climate and what its source regions are. The project will improve our knowledge about the ATAL, the Asian monsoon, its role in the Earth’s atmosphere and its impact on the climate.
