本研究において、当初に想定された研究目的に関して次のような成果があった。1.西部砂漠ベドウィンに関する申請者の調査を、聖者信仰を核として総合化すること。これに関しては、イスラーム信仰実践の諸様態のひとつとしてベドウィンの聖者信仰を理解する枠組みと、ベドウィンの価値体系を構成する諸要素のひとつとして聖者信仰をとらえる枠組みを相補的に語る準備が整った。これは民族誌資料の位置づけをめぐる民族誌学や、イスラームの多元性をめぐる近年の議論にも寄与することが可能と考える。2.地域と分野を離れたイスラームの聖者信仰の議論をなすに十分な研究の蓄積を行うこと。教義面、中東のイスラーム聖者信仰については充分な蓄積が行われた。しかし、中東におけるキリスト教、ユダヤ教の聖者信仰、中東以外のイスラーム聖者信仰については先行研究そのものがじゅうぶんではないという事実に突き当たっており、ヨーロッパのキリスト教聖者信仰などとあわせさらに研究を推進する必要がある。「聖者」の概念の洗い直しをはじめとして、考究すべき問題点を明らかにすることは成功したと思われる。3.聖者性一般の議論を通して社会関係の中における個の問題を論じること。境界媒介者、越境者としての聖者というとらえ方から、従来の構造主義等の理解をよりダイナミックにとらえられる可能性が明らかになった。副次的な目的であるアラビア語との多言語的電子環境の構築に関しては、多言語ワープロおよびデータベース、WINDOWS2000、アラビア語転写フォントなどこの2年間の技術的水準の向上は著しく、これらの導入により一定の成果が上がった。
