今年度は、前年度に引き続き、一次資料と二次資料による分析を進める一方で、特に合衆国中西部に暮らす平原インディアンのスー族に焦点をあてて彼らの信仰とエスニック・アイデンテイテイとの関わりを歴史的に検討することに努めた。夏期休暇中に再度、合衆国サウスダコタ州のスー(ラコタ)族保留地パインリッジで部族大学や保留地周辺の視察を行った他、スー族の伝統的な宗教儀式であるサンダンスを観察した。そして帰国後は、このサンダンスに注目して分析を行い、論文をまとめた。19世紀末から20世紀初めにかけて勢いを増した同化政策のもとで、インディアンの伝統的信仰はその文明化を妨げるものとして禁止されていったが、中でも最も強い弾圧に直面したのがこのサンダンスである。元来、サンダンスは平原インディアンにとって神聖な宗教儀式であったが、この時期、多くの部族が白人からの圧力によってキリスト教を受け入れ、サンダンスを始めとする儀式を捨てていった。本論では、19世紀末から1934年のインディアン再組織法にかけてのラコタ族におけるサンダンスのあり方に注目し、キリスト教との関係とともに、それが表面下で継承されていった側面を検討した。ラコタのサンダンスは、前年度に分析を行ったペヨーテ信仰とは異なって、キリスト教的要素を含まない独自の伝統として維持・強化され、1970年代以降はインディアン文化復興の象徴となる。今回の研究を通じて明らかになったのは、キリスト教との関係において和解と伝統強化それぞれの対応をしてきた先住民の主体的な姿である。今後は、彼らの意識と信仰が特に1960年代以降のエスニック・アイデンテイテイの高まりの中で見せた新たな局面を検討していきたい。
