项目摘要

本研究の目的は、アメリカ合衆国に代表される連邦体制を敷く近（現）代国家内に、「認定」され統合／包摂された「近代的」主権体（ネーション、部族）としての先住民集団の形成過程と、連邦体制内でのその位置づけを検証することにある。また、これと対照的に「先住民」としてのアイデンティティを有しながらもいまだ「認定」を得られていないエスニック・マイノリティ集団の連邦国家内における実体の、前者との歴史的比較研究を行なうことにもある。本研究では上記目的のため、合衆国内の諸先住民集団の事例と、それに加えて合衆国とカナダのボーダーランズ（境界）を縦断する複数の先住民（「混血」）集団の事例にも焦点を当て、分析を行ってきた。また、本研究では上記各先住民集団を構成する成員の実態を検討する上で、その重要な一翼を担ったいわゆる「ホワイト・インディアン」（先住民化した白人）とその「混血」子孫にも着目しているが、本年度は19世紀の北米に移民し先住民化したアイルランド人と先住民集団との関わりにも研究の歩を進めた。7月～8月にカナダと合衆国、12月にはアイルランドに渡航し、複数の研究者と面談し、貴重な資料を収集した。その過程で多くの研究者、特にアメリカ／カナダ先住民や、「混血者」メイティと知己を得、貴重な助言、情報、資料の提供を得た。また、将来にわたる研究協力の約束も得た。とりわけ、カナダにおける調査では先住民／メイティ法学の権威にしてアルバータ大学教授キャスリーン・ベル氏とメイティ著作家マリア・キャンベル氏、また合衆国における調査ではメイティ史研究者ニコラス・ブルーマン氏、アイルランドでは合衆国＝アイルランド外交史の泰斗であるコーク大教授デイビッド・ライアン氏という、いずれも非常に高名で、研究遂行上欠くべからざる知見を有する方々から貴重な協力を得た。その成果は『アメリカ史研究』や大阪大学『待兼山論叢』で公表した。
