项目摘要

コンピュータコーパスを利用した言語研究の中心が現代英語となっている中で、歴史言語学へのコーパスの利用を主な目的として研究を進めた。古英語・中英語・初期近代英語の文献の抜粋を扱ったHelsinki Corpus、古英語から現代英語に至る聖書を集めたThe Bible in Enghshを主要なコーパスとして利用し、中英語期の否定構文の発達を中心に分析した。また、否定構文の中に特徴的に見られる現象、特に非断定形のanyの発達にも焦点をあて、中英語後期の多重否定の衰退とanyの発達との関係を探った。この結果、anyの発達はこれまでの研究で指摘されているよりも若干早いことがわかった。1350-1420年あたりに急激に頻度が高くなり、平叙文・条件文・疑問文に比べて否定文におけるanyの発達が著しいことも明らかになった。さらにコーパスの利用にあたっては、方言や文体の問題も考慮し、多重否定の衰退を社会言語学的な観点からも調査した。特に文体とanyの間の関連性が高く、散文におけるanyの発達が韻文よりも進んでいることが明らかになった。方言については、北部において多重否定の衰退が早い点がはっきりしたものの、anyの発達と方言の関連性を明らかにすることはできなかった。
