2022年度は、英語の史的言語変化にかかわる言語使用者の意識に焦点を当てながら研究を行った。特に重点的なテーマとして取り上げたのは、多重否定構文にかかわる初期近代英語期の言語使用者の意識である。具体的には、初期近代英語期の多数の文献を収録したデータベース、Early English Books Onlineを用いて、1500年から1700年の言語使用者が実際に記述した多重否定構文についてのコメントを文脈とともに抽出した。この際に手がかりとしたのは、two negatives, two negationsなどのキーワードである。そのコメントのあり方を分析することで、すでにこの時期に、多重否定構文への意識が芽生えていたことを確認した。一般に18世紀の規範文法家が多重否定構文を批判的に捉えていたことは、先行研究でも広く指摘されている。しかし本研究では、初期近代英語期についてもさらなる掘り下げが必要であることを明らかにすることができた。一方で、初期近代英語期の人々の多重否定の構文への意識が、英語における多重否定構文の衰退にどれだけ貢献したかについてはさらなる検討を必要とすることも明らかにした。同時に行った初期近代英語の否定構文そのものの分析においては、すでにこの時期には多重否定構文がかなり衰退していたことが明らかになったからである。むしろ初期近代英語期の人々の多重否定構文への意識は、言語変化の結果として現れてきたものである可能性がある。この点についての議論を深めるとともに、研究報告を行った。
