项目摘要

昨年度に引き続き、歴史的コーパスを中心に、必要に応じて現代英語のコーパスを利用した。具体的には、市販のコーパスであるHelsinki Corpus、The Bible in English on CD-ROM、OED on CD-ROMなどの他にも、中英語の文献のいくつかを個人的に電子化し、研究に応用した。本年度の研究は、大きく3つの領域に分類することが可能である。一つ目は、never, noなどの否定語を含む否定構文の研究、二つ目は、否定構文のコンテキスト内に現れるany, everなどの非断定形の研究、そして三番目に、否定的ニュアンスを含んだ心forbidなどの語彙の構文に関する研究である。いずれも昨年度より引き継いだテーマであるが、一つ目の否定構文の研究については、ある程度のデータの収集を終えることができたので、Negative Constructions in Middle Englishというタイトルで著書にまとめた。他の二つのテーマについては、後期中英語から初期近代英語にかけてのかなりの資料を得ることができたものの、まだ歴史的全体像を描くには至っていない。それでもany, everなどの非断定形の発達と多重否定の衰退の関係、非断定形の発達の時期、などについての新たな知見を得ることができた。Forbidに関しても、that節の使用から不定詞や動名詞の使用に移行する過程が明らかになりつつある。Forbidの構文に関する研究の成果は、本年8月にグラスゴーで開催されるThe 12th International Conference on English Historical Linguisticsでも発表の予定である。
