本研究の目的は、ラムサール条約登録湿地のワイズユース(賢明な利用)促進のため、2005年にラムサール条約登録湿地に新規登録された風蓮湖(北海道根室市)の沿岸に分布する擦文時代～アイヌ期における遺跡の概要を把握し、動物遺体分析などの考古学的情報と文献史料による情報から、擦文時代～アイヌ期の人々がどのように風蓮湖周辺の土地利用を行ったかについて明らかにすることである。本研究では風蓮湖沿岸の遺跡踏査を行い、今後の史跡活用を踏まえ、遺跡の地形や竪穴の分布状況がはっきりしていない東梅3竪穴群と東梅4竪穴群の測量調査を行った。また、過去行われた東梅3竪穴群の試掘調査で得られた、擦文時代後期のカマド出土の骨片について同定調査を行った。その結果、サケ・マス類、ウグイ、ニシンなどの魚種が特定された。また、関連研究として風蓮湖に近接する温根沼のほとりにある、関江谷1竪穴群の縄文前期貝塚において貝層の剥ぎ取りを行った。剥ぎ取りは人類の湿地利用の痕跡を示す資料として展示資料として活用される。文献資料では、風蓮湖に流れ込む風蓮川と別当賀川におけるアイヌ民族の漁場争いに関する部分(北海道文書館蔵藤野家文書96～97リール7など)の翻刻を行った。これまでラムサール湿地の活用では、野鳥などの自然環境に関する普及活動が主体的であったが、本研究の実施により人間の湿地利用の一端を明らかにすることができ、地域史と湿地の関わりという新たな視点でワイズユースの推進が可能になった。なお、本研究の速報を新聞紙上に執筆(猪熊樹人「人間と湿地の関わり-風蓮湖・温根沼沿岸の遺跡調査から-」2011.1.1(土)根室新聞.約3,600文字)したほか、講演会を開催し普及に努めた(猪熊樹人「湿地の形成と人間のかかわり」2011.2.25(金)於.根室市総合文化会館、参加者50名)。
